Mercer University is a an independent, private, coeducational university with a Baptist heritage, with the main campus located in Macon, which is a city located in the central US state of Georgia, among the largest metropolitan areas in the state, as well as the county seat of Bibb County. Mercer University first started as a boys’ preparatory school, in Penfield, GA, under the name of Mercer Institute, which opened its doors for the first time, in January, 1833, to a class of only 39 students, being moved to Macon, GA, in 1871, adopting its present name in its present name in 1838. Mercer was one of the few educational institutions that remained opened during the American Civil War, graduating its 1st class, of 3 students, in 1841.

The university does not compete in football, due to the fact that the program was discontinued during World War II, the final game being played in 1942.
